Everyone at Tracen sees the same thing when Almond Eye walks past: top of the class, top of the track, effortless. What they are actually looking at is the residue of something far less pretty — a hatred of losing so absolute that the wiki insists it must be prefaced with no fewer than nine "really"s. The perfection is not the gift. The perfection is what the refusal to lose built.

The clearest window into her is a race that did not count. Before her debut, with nothing at stake, she lost a mock race to an umamusume visiting from overseas — and then crossed an ocean to demand a rematch, dragging along a trainer who had not yet agreed to train her. No trophy existed. No record would show it. It simply could not be allowed to stand. That is the engine: not ambition for glory, but an inability to let a defeat exist anywhere in the world with her name on it.

The cost is written into her official profile as her one flaw — she pushes past what her body can absorb, and the people around her spend a great deal of energy trying to make her stop. There is a softer version of her that surfaces off the track: she makes bento for Fusaichi Pandora, looks out for her underclassman, and is inexplicably excellent at spot-the-difference puzzles. The real mare won nine G1 races including the 2018 Triple Tiara, took Horse of the Year twice, and set a Japan Cup record that stood for seven years — and her jockey, Christophe Lemaire, called her simply "perfect," noting she got nervous before races and forgot about it the instant she was running.
