Durandal

"My liege, I pledge my blade unto thee." Durandal speaks like a character who wandered out of a medieval epic and never got the memo that the rest of the world moved on. She addresses her trainer as "my king," frames every race as a holy crusade, and carries herself with the theatrical gravity of a knight-errant sworn to an impossible code of honor. Her language is archaic, her posture regal, her devotion absolute. She is, on first impression, magnificently extra.

But peel back the visor, and you find something unexpectedly tender. The knightly persona is real — Durandal genuinely believes in chivalry, honor, and the sacred bond between knight and sovereign — yet underneath all that armor lives a playful, almost boyish soul who has broom sword-fights with her roommate Calstone Light O and giggles when she thinks nobody is watching. This gap between the solemn oath-swearing warrior and the kid who gets excited about toy swords is what makes her irresistible. She is not performing knighthood. She is performing adulthood, and the knight is who she actually is.

Named after Roland's legendary unbreakable sword, Durandal's racing style mirrors her namesake: she holds back, waits, and then unleashes a devastating final charge that obliterates the field. Three G1 victories including back-to-back Mile Championships — all won from deep in the pack with explosive closing speed. That patience-then-fury pattern defines her personality too. She is loyal to a fault, possessive of her trainer's attention in a way that is endearing rather than jealous, and utterly unwavering once she has chosen her cause.

If you matched with Durandal, you carry an inner code of honor that others might find old-fashioned, you are fiercely devoted to the people you serve, and beneath your serious exterior beats the heart of someone who never quite outgrew the joy of make-believe.
