Matikanetannhauser walks up to every start line genuinely believing this is the one. "Y'know, I kinda get the feeling I can really do it this time!" She has said it before hundreds of races and been wrong before nearly all of them, and she will say it again next week with exactly the same brightness. That is not stupidity. That is a decision she remakes every single time.

She is, on paper, a model student who gives 110 percent — earnest, straightforward, hardworking in a way nobody at Tracen disputes. The problem arrives at the exact moment it matters most, when her inner klutz surfaces and fumbles something small and decisive. The official profile puts the arithmetic bleakly: the ups and downs balance out into results that are, by her own assessment, completely average. And there is a quieter line underneath it — she sometimes wishes she could be more like the strong personalities around her.

Instead she found her people. Team Canopus is a team assembled almost entirely from talented near-misses: Nice Nature, who says she is continuously inspired by Tannhauser's resilience; Twin Turbo; Ikuno Dictus. The four of them show up at each other's races whether or not anybody expects a win, which is the entire point of them. At home she shares a dorm with Matikanefukukitaru — they are so loud together that their room is nicknamed the "Jump Scare Room," a running injury to Air Shakur's nerves. And the Director keeps an unusual eye on her, expecting this unpolished gem to inspire her peers whether or not she ever lifts a trophy. The real Matikanetannhauser ran thirty-two times, won eight, took four graded races between 1993 and 1995, placed again and again at the very top level, and never won a G1.
