About

Before Admire Vega was born, there were two of them. Her twin sister never got to live — and Vega has spent every day since convinced that she stole that chance, repaying an unpayable debt the only way she knows: train more, win more, become a first-magnitude star bright enough to be seen from wherever her sister is watching. She avoids crowds, dodges friendships, and answers kindness with "...Can I go now?" Not because she is cold, but because atonement, as she understands it, is a road you walk alone.

The girl beneath the resolve keeps slipping out anyway. She is polite even while pushing people away, cannot resist anything soft and fluffy — bedding, slippers, all of it — and can sometimes be found mid-conversation with a little sister nobody else can see. ("I'm talking with my sister right now. Please don't interrupt.") Her discipline is total and frightening: she trains past exhaustion, reads her own psychosomatic leg pain as a deserved sentence, and treats every flicker of joy on the track as evidence of betrayal. Enjoying the race, she believes, was supposed to be her sister's privilege.

In the anime Road to the Top, she forms the 1999 "Big Three" with sunny Narita Top Road — whose friendship she rebuffs again and again — and the flamboyant T.M. Opera O. She loses the Satsuki Sho to Opera O, then runs down Top Road in the final strides of the Japanese Derby, a victory offered to her sister; by year's end each of the three holds one crown. In the game's telling, her sister finally appears in a dream to absolve her: you bear no sin, big sister. Run for yourself. The story closes with her resolution — "For my sister. And even more than that, for myself, I will run" — under a sky holding two stars. Her real counterpart, a Sunday Silence colt whose dam was named Vega, won the 1999 Derby by a neck under Yutaka Take and died at only eight.

If you matched with Admire Vega, you are someone who carries invisible weight without asking for help, whose distance is devotion wearing a disguise, and who is slowly — maybe just now — learning that being happy is not a betrayal of the people you love.
